The one thing that keeps me going day by day is the feeling that I'm making a difference here in Samoa. As corny as that sounds, it couldn't be more true. The education system here isn't horrible by any means. There are definitely teachers that are passionate and committed to the students success. But at the same time, there are a lot of teachers that need training and support.
Teaching teachers techniques and strategies about how to provide an optimal learning environment while implementing behavior intervention strategies is what I do. In a nutshell: I help the teachers with the kiddos that have "bad" behaviors in the classroom. Seems easy. Everyone thinks you just sprinkle a little time out on the kid and voila! Bad behavior gone. I couldn't tell you how incredibly unrealistic that is. There are so many factors. Most of which comes from the teacher. A child is a product of your consequences. If they are acting poorly, you must ask yourself what are you doing that is contributing to that poor behavior. Believe me, its not an easy thing to explain without offending or confusing a large Samoan woman. Haha.  I've learned how to add finesse throughout the years. ;) Most teachers are so accommodating and eager to learn. They welcome me with open arms and love in their hearts. They all call me Carol or "Dr. Carol" (which I think is exceptionally hilarious). Once word got out that my behavior interventions started to work, my phone hasn't stopped ringing off the hook! I am the only behaviorist serving 3 different islands of Samoa: Tutuila (American Samoa), Aunu'u, and Manu'a. Busy is an understatement. But what keeps me going are these beautiful faces and the incredible amount of love and gratitude l receive everyday! Who can honestly say that they love their job?! I'm a lucky girl.

Look at these views I get to see on the way to see my kiddos!
