Dengue 😳

One of the scariest things about living here is the idea of becoming seriously ill in any way. Obviously, American Samoa's one hospital, LBJ, is not as abundant in resources as it is in the states. In addition, there has been an outbreak of dengue that the CDC (center of disease control) ruled as an epidemic. Dengue fever is spread by Mosquitos who carry the Dengue strand from one host to another. The fever can cause: headaches, joint pain, vomiting, rash and obviously a high fever. There have been 4 deaths in American Samoa in the past few months due to a rare strand of dengue that causes hemmoraging! So scary!!  My friend, Liora, called me really sick asking to go to the hospital. She was experiencing all the dengue symptoms! We were so scared for her! She didn't want to be alone so we had her spend the night at our house. We decide to go to the hospital in the AM. We fixed up the guest bedroom and she brought a mosquito net (just in case). We laughed as we put it up bc she looked like a pretty princess! ;) We really hope she doesn't have dengue!! Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Princess Liora!
