Ms. Delgado :)
Today was my first day at Pacific Horizons. I'm teaching high school writing as an elective course. This means the high school students have a choice to choose my writing class or a Samoan Art class. To my surprise, I have 18 kids who chose my class! I thought for sure most would choose Samoan art (I would have if I was in HS!) haha! I was always better in art. Writing seemed so daunting. Who knew 10 years later, I'd be teaching it. :) I got to school early to set up. There was a teacher already in my class just finishing up. I thought I would have some down time to set up my presentation but the kids started walking in immediately. I had the teacher help me with the smart board (smart board is like a giant iPad! You can touch the board to move to the next slide!). I quickly put my presentation up on the big screen. The desks are shaped in a "U" with me in the center. My heart dropped for a few seconds. I felt very nervous and almost embarrassed to be up there. For those few seconds, I felt so uneasy and unprepared as all the kids just looked at me waiting for my response. I quickly snapped out of it and regained my footing. After those seconds passed, I was good to go the rest of the period. I thank my cheer coaching experience. Being in front of a bunch of high school students or just people in general can be scary. But with my experience as a HS cheer coach, I was used to it! I felt confident, excited, and optimistic with these kids. I have grades 9-12th in my class. We went around the room and introduced ourselves. The kids are so fun and easy to talk to. It's so awesome to think I'll be teaching in Samoa this year, helping these teens and hopefully making a positive impact in their lives. I hope they always remember me. The palagi teacher from California that taught them: writing is fun! Haha! Fingers crossed! ;)
